When I was a lad I wanted to be just like Eamonn McCabe Sports Photographer so most weekends when I wasn’t fixing Tele’s I could be found with my camera on the touchline at various local amateur sporting events and even the odd Test Match too!
I soon realised that my Canon 300mm f5.6 lens and Vivitar 2 x tele converter both purchased from Jessops on Hinckley Road in Leicester didn’t quite cut the mustard even if they were attached to a Canon A1. Sadly Canon 600mm f4 lenses were far too expensive for a young TV Engineer back then and still are.
My first assignment as a budding Professional ended in complete and utter disaster when in 1987 I was given a Press Pass (thanks to a mate who worked at Nev Chadwicks) to attend a Leicester City v Spurs evening match at White Hart Lane.
To this day I still don’t know what was worse? The 5-0 thrashing that Leicester received or the fact that all of my negatives came out white!
Eamonn McCabe’s job was safe !
